Topic:
Metamaterials extremely resistant and resilient to large deformations: applications to engineering and perspectives opened by 3D printing prototyping

Abstract:
3D printing technologies opened wide possibilities in the design of novel metamaterials. The technology has to be handled with the standard skills of XX century engineering, but may open to material science the developments expected in the XXI century. In Aeronautical engineering and in biomechanics, for instance, extreme performances are requested in many applications and materials actually available do not respond to such demands. Mathematical design and optimisation can help in the process of discovery.

In this presentation an overview about the possibilities already explored is presented and the role of mathematics and physics is stressed a the most powerful heuristic tool. Also the results of promising experiments are presented and their potential technological impact is commented.
